Nvidia Tegra 3 and Nvidia Tegra 2 Performance Test

Nvidia Tegra 3 was launched for the first time along with the Transformer Prime Tablet made by Asus. The first tests confirm that those from Nvidia kept their word and brought a new system that offers better performance and low power consumption.

Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime is the first device using Nvidia Tegra 3 platform, but many are curious to see the differences between Tegra 3 and Tegra 2. According to Nvidia, Tegra 3 platform will be performing three times better graphics performances than the Tegra 2 and will consume up to 61% less energy.

Tegra 3 quad core processor is tested with an NVIDIA GeForce making the advantages more visible: it offers more dynamic image brightness, HD effects are much better played and in addition, there is 3D support. The biggest difference between the two is of course at the cores, from dual core to quad core, although the “quad” (“four” in Latin) is not the number of cores that Tegra 3 consist of, because it has five cores. The fifth core of the Tegra 3 take functions when the device is in stand by mode. When activities require greater processing power, the 4 cores work without using the fifth.

Taking the kernels functions in this way reduces processor energy consumption, therefore is increased the autonomy of the device as well as its performance.

Nvidia announced the Tegra 3 details in the last three months. The four-cores are ARM Cortex A9, and the fifth core – Companion Core – is made with silicone and consume less energy. Some performance tests were already published on the Internet.

The use of cores in this way was called vSMP – Variable Symmetrical Multi-Processing.

Nvidia has great plans in the future, as shown in the picture above, and if so far they have kept the promises, we can be sure that the future looks bright.
